  1. Surf and turf
    Surfing, Biarritz. © Le Doaré

Biarritz is undisputed surfing king of Europe, thanks to the long sandy Grande Plage beach and year-round North-Atlantic swells funnelling into the Gulf de Gascogne. Park up your camper van and join the surfer dudes in their thousands, all catching waves along the glorious Anglet and Côte-des-Basques oceanfront. If that's too energetic, play a round of golf at the prestigious 'Le Phare' Biarritz golf course or improve your swing at Ilbarritz International Golf Training Centre.

  2. Sea sights

Biarritz's long love affair with the sea is fully documented in the Musée de la Mer and aquarium. See the white statue of the Virgin Mary perched on her rock at Pointe Atalaye and get to know pretty Port des Pêcheurs, once a fishing port but now bobbing with pleasure craft. North of town, visit the Phare de Biarritz lighthouse, still guarding the shoreline to this day.

  3. Basque cooking

A break in Biarritz is a gastronomic delight. Basque specialities are served everywhere from top restaurants to friendly bodegas or simple buvettes. Tapas are very much on the menu: try chipirones (squid cooked in its own ink), piperade (scrambled eggs laced with tomato and chilli) and zikiro (flame-grilled lamb); round off with kanougas (yummy chocolate toffee). Try the Port des Pêcheurs for spankingly fresh seafood and the little cabines lining the Grand Plage for crêpes and ice cream.

  4. Party time

See the sun sink over the surf on Côte-des-Basques beach with a cocktail in your hand and watch immaculately turned-out locals qui font leur promenade. After dark it's all happening around the cosmopolitan Grande Plage. Here, holidaying trendies kick off their night in a cluster of waterside bars, casual cafés and sleek restaurants before partying on the beach-side terraces at Blue Cargo, one of the hottest tickets in town.

  5. A new you

If you've overdone it on the party front, it's time for a detox. Seawater therapies are the cure for aching limbs and fuzzy heads. The Biarritz Thalassa Institute in Sofitel Hôtel Miramar has postnatal therapies on its menu, while the Thermes Marins features affordable short-break 'cures' and relaxation packages. The tranquil Spa Kémana offers exquisite, indulgent half days and is big on Zen massages and ice hammams – ouch.

Your Tips

These are your insider tips. If you'd like to share your Biarritz tips with us, just click on "Submit top tip".

  1. Get a round in

Keen golfers should get a Biarritz Golf Pass, which allows five rounds on six courses. Passes are for sale at each participating course, including Golf de Biarritz Le Phare and Golf de Moliets. One of the courses (Golf d'Ilbarritz) is 9-hole, the others are all 18. Lindsay McKenzie, Harrogate

  2. Surf's up

There's a really good atmosphere along the Côte-des-Basques and Anglet beaches when the surf bums are waiting for low tide – everyone hangs out in little crowds, picnicking along the sea walls or just swapping surfing stories. The local kids always try to outdo les anglais and les italiens by surfing bigger waves but it is all very good humoured! There are lots of surfer shops dotted around town but they are quite expensive! Andy, Newquay
